Paper title:
The Hidden cost of Yes – How and when a well placed no can be more positive than an automatic yes.
A real story of getting it wrong for the what felt like the right reasons with practical tips on how it can done differently
Session key points:
- People pleasing – successful habits aren’t always healthy
- Breaking the pattern of saying yes all the time (or feeling we have to)
- How can we say no positively in a way that is better for the client, stakeholders and ourselves?
- When say no, what might they hear?
- When no is said to us, what might we hear?
Background:
In 2019, James was a Sales Director at Toluna a global survey technology and panel company. Mine was the leading sales team in Europe dealing with major brands such as GSK, Reckitt, Unilever, P&G, Coca-Cola and many more. My team delivered double digit revenue growth, every year.
In March of that year I suffered a completely unexpected and almost total mental and physical breakdown, following a severe and very public anxiety attack. I spent the remainder of the year on leave.
Throughout my career and at it’s peak, not all of my successful habits and behaviours were sustainable.
